The Prisoners' Club stated that the number of administrative detainees on hunger strike in Israeli prisons has risen to 13 detainees after six additional detainees in Raymond Prison joined the open hunger strike since yesterday, August 10, 2023.
The detainees are: Hadi Naji Nazal, Muhammad Taysir Zakarna, and Anas Ahmad Kamil - all from the town of Qabatiya in Jenin. They have been detained since last May. Additionally, Abdul Rahman Iyad Baraqah from Aqabat Jabr refugee camp in Jericho, detained since last April; Muhammad Bassam Akhmis from Beit Ummar in Hebron, detained since last November 2022; and Zuhdi Talal 'Obeido from Hebron, detained since last March.
The Prisoners' Club added that seven other detainees are continuing their strikes for varying periods. These include Saif Hamdan, Saleh Rabay'a, Qusay Khudair, and Osama Khalil, who have been on hunger strike for 13 days. Additionally, the detainees Kayed Al-Fasfous and Sultan Khalouf continue their strike for nine days, along with detainee Osama Dqroq, who began his strike five days ago.
The hunger strike by the 13 detainees coincides with the protest actions undertaken by administrative detainees in Ofer Prison and several other prisons, as well as the continued boycott of military courts by around 60 detainees.
The Prisoners' Club reiterated that the escalation of strikes comes amid the ongoing Israeli authorities' escalation of the crime of administrative detention, with the number of administrative detainees exceeding 1,200 detainees. This percentage is the highest in years since the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
It is worth mentioning that the Israeli authorities issued 1,978 administrative detention orders since the beginning of this year, with the highest number issued in July, reaching 370 orders.
