The Israeli occupation will call Trump a new settlement in the Golan Heights

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he planned to name US President Donald Trump on a new settlement to be built in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights in recognition of his recognition of Israel´s sovereignty over it.

Netanyahu, who is on a visit to the region with his family for the Passover holiday, said in a video message that he would present the government with a resolution calling for Trump´s name on the new settlement.

"We, all Israelis, were deeply moved when President Trump took his historic decision to recognize Israel´s sovereignty over the Golan Heights," he said.

The US president announced on March 21 his country´s recognition of Israel´s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a decision that runs counter to Washington´s decades-long path.

At a meeting of the Security Council last month at the request of Syria, Trump´s decision was denounced as a violation of international law as stipulated in United Nations resolutions.

The other four permanent members of the Council - Britain, China, France and Russia - declared that they would continue to regard the Golan as Arab land occupied by Israel.

Israel employed the Golan in 1967 and annexed it in 1981. Trump signed recognition of Israel´s sovereignty over the plateau, sparking a wave of world protests against the decision, which follows its decision in 2017 to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
