The European Union has renewed its support for holding general elections in Palestine, including occupied East Jerusalem.
This came during a meeting between the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union / European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Malki in Brussels on Monday, where the two parties exchanged views on the upcoming Palestinian elections.
The High Representative, Borrell, reiterated the European Union´s strong support for holding elections in all parts of the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
He said in a statement: The European Union is ready to do everything it can to support this important process, including through its continuous assistance to the Central Elections Commission, and that inclusive, accountable and functional Palestinian democratic institutions based on respect for the rule of law and human rights are necessary for a two-state solution.
