European Union (EU) member states on Friday postponed a decision on whether to extend Britain´s Brexit term because it did not agree on the duration of the extension, the European Commission said.
"The 27 EU member states have agreed on the principle of extension, and now work is continuing over the coming days," said Mina Andreeva, spokeswoman for the Commission, the EU´s executive arm.
Andreeva´s comments came after a meeting of ambassadors of the 27 countries, and made clear there were no plans for an emergency summit of the bloc´s leaders.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been forced to apply to Brussels, under a binding law, to extend his country´s exit from the European Union for three months, ahead of its October 31 deadline.
Johnson´s recent exit deal with the European Union faced a stumbling block when it was initially approved by British lawmakers, but they scrapped a proposal with a three-day timetable to turn it into law.
Johnson called on Thursday for early elections on December 12 to break the deadlock, but British Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn rejected it.
