Saudi Arabia has transferred $50 million pledged to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

During his visit to Saudi Arabia on 28 November last year, the Commissioner-General of the Agency (UNRWA) Pierre Krähenbühl, together with the general supervisor of the King Salman Center for humanitarian Aid and relief Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Rabeeah, signed an agreement to support UNRWA´s main services in Education, health and social services during the current year 2018.

In a statement issued on Friday, UNRWA said, "this generous and critical donation, valued at $50 million," has been transformed into "the unprecedented support the agency has received from its donors and partners globally, enabling it to overcome the worst financial crisis it has ever known."

The Commissioner-General expressed his deep appreciation and thanks for the provision of this extraordinary donation, which comes in response to the pledge made by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz in April this year during the Arab Summit, to say: "We are very grateful for the generous support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has been steadily over the past years. The ideal donation of $50 million for the year 2018 for the main services (UNRWA) is a milestone in our important collaboration.

"Saudi Arabia, along with its humanitarian and development agencies, is an important and enduring partner of UNRWA." This year alone, Saudi Arabia donated more than $160 million to the agency (UNRWA), including projects in all five regions of its operations, making it a major contributor to UNRWA during 2018.
