Russia has backed off its threat to ban Twitter, saying the social media platform has sped up efforts to remove content that local organizers deemed illegal.
And the "Bloomberg" news agency reported that Russia´s Internet censorship agency "Roskomnadzor" announced in a statement today, Monday that Twitter held a video conference with Russian organizers on April 1, and is now removing content promoting illegal activity or pornographic material at a faster rate. .
In a move that raised fears of tightening controls on the Internet, the regulator last month made content on Twitter slower to download and threatened to ban the service entirely within a month if the reported content was not deleted.
Roscomnadzor said the slowdown will continue until May 15 to give Twitter time to remove more content.
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
The company had previously expressed concerns about attempts to stifle online conversations and said it did not allow its platform to be used to promote illegal activities.
The Russian government stepped up pressure on social media because of the posts promoting protests against the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny earlier this year.
Facebook, Telegram, TikTok and Google are also facing fines threats in Russia for not removing some of the content.
