US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that President Donald Trump has not yet made a decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan after he announced the cancellation of secret meetings with top Taliban leaders and the president of Afghanistan.
"We will talk about this in the coming days," Pompeo told ABC, adding that consultations would be held on details of the appropriate level and nature of the troops. "President Trump and the secretary of defense will make the right decisions," he said.
Asked if the peace efforts led by US special envoy for Afghan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad had failed, he replied: "He will remain at home now."
Pompeo expressed the hope that "the Taliban change its behavior, and to adhere to the things that we have held talks for months."
