Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu´s candidate for the presidency of Jerusalem´s occupation municipality was defeated on Wednesday, with the outcome of the election results Tuesday.
The indicators are moving toward a runoff between two candidates, one secular and the other a veteran political activist allied with the city´s hard-orthodox.
Many had weighted the victory of Zeev Ilkin, the current Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, after receiving Netanyahu´s support and the support of Jerusalem´s occupying mayor, Nerbaraket, who would leave the post to run for Parliament.
Due to the fact that none of the candidates received 40 percent of the vote, a return tour is scheduled between political activist Moshe Leon and secular candidate Ofer Berkovic.
The majority of the city´s residents, who make up more than a third of its population, boycotted the elections.
