Minister of Labor: Unemployment rate in Gaza is 52%

Minister of Labor Nassri Abu Jaysh said that the Israeli government is deducting about 15% monthly from the clearing funds, which is about 40 million shekels, which negatively affect the operating sector, stressing that the government will not accept economic solutions in return for our national rights. .

This came during a meeting with the sectoral working group, in the presence of representatives of German, Canadian and Italian representatives and agencies, and ministries and civil society organizations, in the ministry hall in Ramallah on Wednesday.

Abu Hish added that the ministry has a 100-day work plan that includes several axes to reduce high unemployment rates in Palestine and 30% in the Gaza Strip and 52% in the Gaza Strip . Through the laws on wages and public policies, the employment sector and its role in reducing the unemployment rate through the development of a national strategy for employment in Palestine.

He also pointed to the signing of a number of agreements in the operating sector with the Bank of Palestine and the National Bank to support young people in the establishment of small and medium enterprises, focusing on marginalized areas and the city of Jerusalem , targeting women and persons with disabilities. Minimum wage.

He also spoke about the cooperative work force and cooperatives as part of the ministry´s work and a lever for increasing production in Palestine.

Abu Jaish referred to cooperation with the Arab and International Labor Organizations to organize a donors´ conference to support employment in Palestine.

In turn, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor Samer Salama said that the priorities of the ministry have been developed through the plan of the labor sector, and thus became a national priority. Therefore, we have to interact to achieve them as local and international partners and institutions of Palestinian civil society and government ministries.

He added that a training center in Birzeit would be used by the ministry as a self-employment center to reduce unemployment, calling on donors to intensify their efforts and support in this regard.

Salamah pointed out that the Ministry of Labor in the final stages of restructuring the new ministry, taking into account the future aspirations and the sectoral plan of the labor sector, so as to become more effective in the implementation of programs related to the ministry.

Regarding the development of TVET, Salama said that the government is considering the possibility of establishing a university or vocational college to provide services related to this sector, and we seek to unify this system to enhance the services provided in this field to close the gap in the labor market between supply and demand.

Salameh pointed out that the Palestinian Fund for Employment and Social Protection for Workers is one of the tools of the Ministry of Labor. The fund will be modernized at the technical level to take its leading role in youth employment and self employment.

For his part, the representative of the International Labor Organization in Palestine, Munir Kalibou, the need to unite efforts to reduce contradictions and duplication in the presentation, expressing his hope for German support for the development of the Palestinian labor sector and benefit from their experience in this area, in addition to the experience of the rest of international partners.

He added that the expected role of the ILO is not only to raise funds for operation and to convene an international donor conference, but also through guidance and tools, a full program of operational plan in Palestine, how to attract workers to the Palestinian labor market , support people with disabilities,.
