Mexico City is celebrating its 500th anniversary, so why not visit it in 2021?

Most of us look at 2021 with optimism, but for Mexico this year it is not just about bidding farewell to 2020.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says 2021 will be Mexico´s "year of independence and greatness" as it will not only celebrate the 500th anniversary of Mexico City, but also the 200th anniversary since Mexico´s independence from Spain.

While many visitors flock to coastal destinations like Tulum or Cabo, Mexico City offers a range of experiences that go beyond just wearing a swimsuit and sipping drinks by the pool, according to Travel Leisure.

In Mexico City, you can visit the waterways in Sochimilco, which were used by the Aztecs to collect and transport the harvest, and the brightly colored Mexican gondolas can be seen anchored and awaiting to be managed with sticks that reach the bottom of the canals.

Riders can also buy from the floating street vendors who sell drinks, tamales and boiled corn, or pay a small amount for a mariachi band to play for them.

In the northeast of Sochimilco is Teotihuacan, a city that was abandoned for more than a century before the Aztecs reached it 700 years ago. Although not much is known about the early builders, some mysteries were recently solved six years ago, when 75,000 artifacts were discovered.

After climbing some 250 degrees to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, lunch can be enjoyed below ground level at La Grotta, a cave restaurant that uses pre-colonial Spanish cooking techniques and local ingredients to create delicious dishes.
