Mexican President Lopez Obrador declares that he has tested positive for COVID-19

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, aged sixty-seven, announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for Covid-19, indicating that his symptoms are mild and that he will remain optimistic.

"I regret to inform you that I have Covid-19. The symptoms are mild, but I am receiving medical treatment," Lopez Obrador wrote on his official Facebook account.

"As always, I am optimistic," added the left-wing populist, who rarely wears a mask in public places, and who has continued most of his activities during the pandemic.

Lopez Obrador indicated that he would continue working from the presidential palace, announcing that he had authorized Interior Minister Olga Sanchez to represent him this week during his daily press conference at seven local time (1300 GMT).

The left-wing leader had three public activities during the weekend, the last of which was Friday morning in the state of San Luis Potosi (north).

The Mexican president suffered heart problems, which he was treated in a private hospital in 2013. He also suffers from high blood pressure.

Other leaders who have also contracted Covid-19 include British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US Presidents Donald Trump, Brazil´s Jair Bolsonaro and French Emmanuel Macron.
