Human rights and civil organizations affirmed today, Thursday, the illegality of the administrative detention practiced by the occupation against Palestinian prisoners in prisons.
These institutions affirmed, during a press conference, their rejection of the detention policy and affirmation of a number of rights that prisoners and detainees in occupation prisons should enjoy, and their legitimate right to go on hunger strike to extract their rights.
Jamil Sarhan, Deputy Director-General of the Independent Commission for Human Rights, said in a speech that the Israeli occupation authorities are committing violations that violate international standards related to human rights, including the administrative detention of Palestinians.
Sarhan pointed to a number of legal violations involving arbitrary administrative detention, which is a form of torture, foremost of which is that detention is carried out without charge or trial, is extended and is not subject to a time limit, and violates the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The Palestinian human rights defender affirmed the rejection of this detention by human rights institutions for its illegality and violation of all international standards, foremost of which is the right to a fair trial.
Sarhan praised the heroic role of the prisoners on hunger strike in order to achieve a fair trial and reject administrative detention leading to their release, as 12 prisoners are still on hunger strike, 2 of whom have exceeded their 30-day strike.
He stressed the solidarity of human rights organizations with the hunger strikers, their assertion of their legitimate demands, and the occupation’s responsibility for their safety and life, appreciating the efforts made by all concerned institutions and the Prisoners’ Committee for the national and Islamic forces, at this time within the framework of the national and international campaign to defend prisoners and end administrative detention.
For his part, Amjad Al-Shawa, head of the NGO Network, said that the issue of prisoners is constantly present, and it is the cause of every Palestinian and every free person, and it is constantly adopted and supported by civil society institutions, but the effort does not rise to the level of suffering of prisoners in prisons, which requires everyone to work responsibly towards The issue of prisoners, especially the administrative detainees.
Al-Shawa called for activating support at the internal level and rejecting the Palestinian political division that affects all issues of our Palestinian people, foremost of which is the issue of prisoners who had the honor of initiating the declaration of the National Accord Document, pointing to the need to take a serious stance at the international level towards violations against our Palestinian people. With their introduction, the administrative detainees, in order to completely end this file and ensure the release of all detainees.
It is noteworthy that there are 540 administrative detainees in the Israeli occupation prisons, where the occupation authorities use administrative detention whenever they lack evidence to accuse a person who opposes its policy, and relies on a secret file, without justification and legitimate justification, in violation of international laws and the Fourth Geneva Convention, and without commitment to the principles It deprives administrative detainees of their most basic rights, including not allowing them and their lawyers access to the reasons for their arrest.
