The Twitter account of the personal website of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hacked early Thursday morning, according to the operator of the social media platform.
A series of tweets were sent from the account asking its followers to donate cryptocurrency to the Prime Minister´s Relief Fund. Twitter said it learned of the activity and had taken steps to secure the compromised account.
It is noteworthy that "Narendramodi_in" is the official Twitter account for Modi´s personal website. The account has more than 2.5 million followers, and was created in May 2011.
Modi´s personal Twitter account, which has more than 61 million followers, was not affected by the incident.
"We are actively investigating what happened. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being affected," a Twitter spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
The tweets were later deleted and the account restored.
In July, hackers gained access to Twitter´s internal systems to penetrate some of the platform´s most important personal accounts, including those of US presidential candidate Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, Tesla founder Elon Musk and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. .
According to reports, the accounts of the companies "Uber" and "Apple" were also compromised.
