Athens - Greece considered last week´s agreement between Turkey and Libya to divide Mediterranean spheres of influence and interests in violation of international maritime law, Greek foreign ministry sources said Thursday.
Ankara and the Libyan Accord government in Tripoli, which controls a small part of Libya, have signed an agreement on security and joint military cooperation, which also regulates the setting of borders for places of influence within the Mediterranean.
According to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut ÇavuÅŸoÙˆlu, Turkey is seeking to preserve its "rights" in the eastern Mediterranean and ensure fair participation in the region´s natural resources.
Several Greek media have published details of the deal.
Athens represents the view that Turkey and Libya violate this agreement the Greek continental shelf south of Crete.
According to the Turkish interpretation, Crete does not have a continental shelf behind its territorial waters.
It is believed that there are large quantities of natural gas south of the Greek island.
Greece and Turkey are members of NATO.
Cyprus, Israel and Egypt also see the agreement as an attack on their interests.
