German authorities have fined 2 million euros ($ 2.3 million) for Facebook under a law aimed at fighting hate speech.
The Federal Justice Office said on Tuesday that the social networking company failed to meet transparency requirements in its handling of hate speech complaints.
He added that the Facebook report for the first half of 2018 did not reflect the real number of complaints of illegal content suspected, which includes in Germany anti-Semitic insults and materials that incite hatred against people or groups based on their religion or ethnicity.
"There was also incomplete information on the language skills and training of staff authorized to deal with complaints of hate speech, and Facebook was not promptly punished," the office said.
In 2018, the US company Facebook reported that it had received 1,048 complaints of illegal content on its program during the second half of the year, while Twitter and YouTube reported about 250,000 complaints.
