Gaza health: out of laboratory testing for newborns

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced, this evening, Monday, that the PKU laboratory examination for newborns has run out.

Ayman Al-Halabi, Director General of the Ministry´s Supportive Medical Services, warned, during a press statement, of the negative repercussions on the health of newborns after the PKU has run out of balances.

The examination is conducted for children during the first week of birth, to determine the level of amino acids necessary for the growth and formation of the brain and the development of cognition, or what is known (phenylketonuria).

Al-Halabi indicated that delaying the diagnostic and examination process for newborns can cause serious complications to the health of children, which may reach mental retardation.

Al-Halabi appealed to all concerned parties to the necessity of providing the examination material to enable examination of newborns and to spare them relapses of delayed mental development.
