European Council President Donald Tusk on Wednesday called for clarification of the circumstances of the "shocking assassination" of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, "Whoever is executing."
"The only European concern is to uncover all the details of this issue," he said in front of the European lawmakers gathered during a plenary session in Strasbourg.
"It is a terrible crime to the extent that any trace of hypocrisy will make us feel ashamed," he said, calling on European lawmakers to ensure that "Europe and Member States or institutions refrain from any ambiguous stance on this issue."
17 days after Jamal Khashoggi´s disappearance, Riyadh announced on Saturday that Khashoggi had mistakenly been killed in her consulate during a "brawl", asserting that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was unaware of what had happened. Several states and organizations questioned the Saudi novel.
But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday described the killing of Khashoggi as a "brutal crime", noting that he had been "planned" over several days and carried out by a team of "15".
