The Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Saeb Erekat, confirmed on Monday, the absolute rejection of the Israeli government´s "plan" to stop the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem. .
In a statement after online conversations with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philip Lazarini, Erekat said that UNRWA should continue to shoulder its responsibilities towards Palestinian refugees in all areas of its operations, including East Jerusalem.
Erekat said that President Abbas made calls to donor countries to assume their responsibility towards filling UNRWA´s financial deficit to ensure the continuation of its services.
It is noteworthy that the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem approved early this year the establishment of an educational school complex affiliated to the Israeli Ministry of Education in East Jerusalem, in a move that UNRWA considered was aimed at liquidating its presence.
