Erekat accuses the American administration of opposing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination

Chief negotiator Saeb Erekat on Sunday accused the US administration of fighting the Palestinian people´s right to self-determination.

Erekat strongly criticized the US administration´s decision to merge its consulate in Jerusalem, which was charged with providing services to the Palestinians, and is due to enter into force tomorrow.

Erekat said that "the integration of the US Consulate in the embassy represents the last nail in the coffin of the role of the US administration in the peace industry."

He added that "the consulate worked 175 years in Jerusalem - Palestine, and its closure has nothing to do with performance, but with a fanatical ideology that refuses to have the Palestinian people the right to self-determination."

The Palestinians have suspended political contacts with the Bush administration since he announced in December 2017 recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the Washington embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city months later.
