China formally protests the United States on arms sales to Taiwan

China on Friday rejected the sale of US arms to Taiwan and lodged a formal protest with the US side.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks when asked to comment on the US pushing ahead with the sale of F-16V fighter jets to Taiwan in an estimated $ 8 billion deal.

Hua said the US side violated the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 statement, and that Washington interfered in China´s internal affairs and damaged China´s sovereignty and security interests.

Hua stressed that the Taiwan issue affects China´s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as China´s core interests. Hua urged the United States to recognize the great sensitivity and harmful character of the relevant issue and adhere to the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques.

Hua urged the United States to stop Taiwan´s arms sales and military contacts, otherwise the Chinese side would definitely take countermeasures and Washington would be held responsible for all the consequences.
