British opposition urges Johnson to be ousted to avoid Brexit without agreement

British opposition Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbin has urged parliament to topple Prime Minister Boris Johnson before taking the country out of the European Union without an agreement.

Corbin called on other parties that fear the consequences of Britain´s chaotic exit from the European Union not to give confidence to the Johnson government, and work to appoint an interim government to replace them.

Corbin has offered to head the new interim government, which has a fixed duration, so that he can ask the leaders of the 27 EU member states to postpone the date set for Brexit on October 31.

"As a leader of the opposition, I will then seek the confidence of the parliament for a government for a fixed term in order to call a general election and secure the necessary extension," Corbin said in a letter to pro- and moderate European lawmakers.

"In those general elections, Labor will commit to a public vote on the terms of leaving the EU, including the option of staying."

Corbin did not say when he intended to file a no-confidence motion.

A British government spokesman said Corbin´s proposal "will cancel the referendum and destroy the economy."

It is also unclear whether the proposed general election will lead to more EU-friendly parties in parliament.

In the European Parliament elections in May, the new Brexit party, headed by populist Nigel Faraj, ranked first in Britain with 30 percent of the vote.

Liberal Democrats and workers came in second and third, while the Conservatives narrowly managed to finish fourth, contributing to the fall of Prime Minister Theresa May.
