The company has banned 200,000 accounts on its platform, claiming to be part of the "Chinese government´s campaign to target the protest movement in Hong Kong," a Twitter source said.
The company claimed that the reason for the ban is that these pages have violated the "laws of use", and that the decision to ban them is part of the efforts of "Twitter" to "curb malicious political activity."
Of the 200,000 blocked accounts, Twitter named only two accounts, ctcc507 and HKpoliticalnew, and confirmed that they had posted tweets depicting protesters in Hong Kong as "violent gangs."
It added that there are 936 additional accounts believe that the owners tried to sow political dispute in Hong Kong, by undermining the legitimacy of the protest movement.
In addition, the source added that the company has banned accounts "supported by the Chinese government", the use of advertising services on its site, while not specifying the number and quality of those accounts.
