An Australian economic adviser to Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was placed under house arrest following a military coup, has been arrested, this consultant confirmed to the BBC on Saturday.
Chancellor Sean Tornell, a professor at Macquarie University, is the first foreign citizen to be confirmed of his arrest by the new junta since he took office on Monday after the arrest of Suu Kyi and other senior officials of his National League for Democracy party.
He told the radio station, "I am being arrested and I might be charged, I don´t know what it will be." He added that he was asked to visit the hotel.
"Everyone acts polite, but it is clear that I am not free to move around or anything like that," he said.
Attempts to contact Tornell earlier on Saturday failed.
Macquarie University said it was aware of Tornell´s arrest reports, adding that it fully supported "his work in Myanmar and the Australian government´s efforts to secure his prompt release."
A key member of the National League for Democracy, who requested anonymity, said Tornell recently stopped advising Suu Kyi on the Southeast Asian country´s economy.
