Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that Finland´s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) cannot pass without a political reaction, according to the Russian Sputnik news agency reported today, Saturday.
Observers expected that the ruling Social Democratic Party in Finland today announced its support for joining the Western military alliance.
Finland´s President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin backed joining NATO "without delay" last week, saying it would enhance the country´s security.
The SPD´s support for Finland´s NATO membership means that a large majority in the Finnish parliament supports the move, paving the way for the application for membership in the coming days.
Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometre border with Russia, has seen an increase in popular support for the country´s entry into NATO since the outbreak of Russia´s war against Ukraine in late February.
