A UN committee recognizes Israel´s "apartheid" practice of the Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line

For the first time, and with a historical decision, the Committee against All Forms of Racial Discrimination at the United Nations, at the end of last week, published its conclusions and recommendations following the periodic session held by the committee in Geneva, Switzerland, in which it dealt with the State of Israel as a system One practices apartheid policies against the Palestinian people on both sides of the Green Line without discrimination on the background of legal status or geographic location.

In its recommendations, the committee drew attention to a number of violations committed by Israel against the Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line and their basic rights through the racial discrimination that Israel has embedded in its policies and legislation, such as the Law of Acceptance Committees and Settlement Policies and the Law of Reunification and others.

The committee saw the Basic Law - Nationalism, as a racist law, and contrary to the terms of the agreement signed by Israel. It also called for an end to the policies of forced displacement, home demolition, and displacement of the Palestinian population on both sides of the Green Line, especially in the Negev. The committee recommended that Israel review all policies and laws that cause apartheid between the Jewish and non-Jewish populations in all areas "under Israeli control".

The committee considered that the Basic-Nationalism Law reinforces these violations and entrenches racial discrimination against Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line, and violates the Palestinian people´s right to self-determination, as well as affirming the illegality of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, occupied Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan.

Commenting on the committee’s conclusions and recommendations, the Adalah Center and Al-Haq Foundation said in a joint statement that “for many years, the United Nations committees separated the Palestinian people during their analysis of the violations committed against it, but this time they took a new and historical basis of focus, as they dealt with the Palestinian people under the control of the regime The Israelis in different regions as one unit. "

The statement considered that "the Basic Law - Nationalism was a pivotal point in the Israeli policies, and it is considered an essential pillar for understanding the nature of the Israeli system, its policies and orientations and what it aspires to."

He pointed out that "these historical recommendations and conclusions necessitate changing the legal and legal discourse about the regime in Israel, and start analyzing its policies against the Palestinian people as a single unit without splitting or dividing according to legal status or geographical presence."

He believed that "this decision opens a new opportunity for the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people to seek a decision in the United Nations General Assembly that authorizes the International Court of Justice to give its opinion on the issue of the nature of the Israeli system as a racist regime."

It is worth noting that these recommendations came after the joint work of Palestinian, regional and international human rights associations and centers, including the Adalah Center and the Al-Haq Foundation.
