A fruitless meeting of the Security Council on Gaza

The UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting Tuesday, during which it discussed the military escalation in the Gaza Strip in recent days, but council members failed to reach any agreement on ways to settle the situation in the besieged sector, diplomats said.

The meeting, which was held at the request of Kuwait, representing the Arab States of the Council, and Bolivia, lasted 50 minutes and ended to a "failure", according to Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour.

Mansour told reporters that the Security Council was "paralysed" and "failed to shoulder its responsibilities" and stopped the violence, stressing that "there is a state that has closed the door to dialogue", referring to the United States, whose positions in the United Nations have been increasingly biased towards Israel since Donald Trump took over The reins of power.

It is for this reason that the Security Council was unable to issue a presidential statement on the situation in Gaza, as the Council´s statements are issued unanimously.

The Kuwaiti ambassador to the United Nations said that the majority of Security Council members considered that the Council should "do something", such as a visit to the region, but no decision had been taken on the issue.

"We will not accept the call of the two sides for restraint," Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon held the Council meeting.

"There is a side attacking and firing 400 rockets at civilians, and there is another side that protects its civilians," he said.

The Security Council meeting was held after Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip and Hamas announced that they had brokered an Egyptian ceasefire between them and Israel.

The factions said that they would abide by the truce as long as Israel was committed to it, which did not officially confirm the truce.
