A father and daughter died on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan after they were buried in snow, according to local media reported today, Wednesday.
The local Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper reported that rescuers found the bodies of an 84-year-old man and his 59-year-old daughter late Tuesday, who were buried under the snow, which was believed to have fallen from the roof in the city of Iwamizawa.
The newspaper said that the daughter was found dead at the scene, while the father was announced dead after he was taken to hospital.
The new snowfall brought a record 142 cm accumulation in Iwamizawa on Tuesday.
The heavy snow caused the cancellation of 135 trains on the island on Tuesday, according to the Hokkaido Railway Company.
The meteorological agency forecast more snowfall in northern Japan and the coast of the Sea of ​​Japan later this week.
