A 6.1-magnitude quake hits a Japanese island area and no tsunami warning

An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6.1 hit the Japanese island of Torishima, Japan´s Meteorological Agency said Tuesday.

The quake occurred at 10:40 pm local time at 29.1 degrees north latitude and 139.8 degrees east latitude, the agency said.

The quake occurred at sea at a depth of 440 km, the agency said.

On the Japanese seismic scale, which reached a peak of 7 degrees, the earthquake recorded 4 degrees in Ogasawara and a village in Tokyo´s sub-province on the mainland more than 1,000 km away.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries caused by the earthquake, and no tsunami warning was issued by Japan Meteorological Agency.
