The Palestinian Center for Human Rights called today, Wednesday, for the urgent need to remove the remnants of the Israeli aggression regarding unexploded bombs, in order to reduce the risk of civilian casualties.
In a statement, the center confirmed that the effects of the recent aggression still threaten the lives of citizens, as the residents of the Gaza Strip have become victims even after the end of the aggression. There is a real danger lurking in their lives due to the fall of many unexploded missiles and bombs, whose indiscriminate effects threaten their lives at every moment.
The Center pointed out that due to the suffocating and arbitrary siege imposed by the occupation authorities on the Gaza Strip, the lack of equipment and capabilities prevented the technical teams of the Ministry of Interior in the Gaza Strip from completing the operations of treating and destroying the remnants of Israeli munitions and weapons that fell during the last aggression, which created a humanitarian disaster. It threatens the lives of the civilian population in the Strip.
The Israeli warplanes’ destruction of the headquarters and equipment of the explosives engineering unit in Gaza City during the last aggression, deepened the crisis and in an unprecedented way limiting the efficiency and work of the unit, making it unable to deal with suspicious and potentially explosive objects and waste.
According to sources in the Police Explosives Engineering Unit in Gaza City, the total remnants of the recent occupation aggression amounted to about 700 suspicious objects and unexploded and unexploded ordnance, ranging from remnants of tank and artillery shells and fragments of guided missiles as well as fragments of dropped bombs. And the limited technical staff of specialized explosives experts, the unit was unable to deal with, dismantle and destroy it.
One of the most important challenges that impede the work of the engineering unit is the difficulty of technical teams accessing the remnants of the aggression and suspicious objects due to their falling into the ground under destroyed buildings and in dangerous and open areas, in light of the lack of mechanisms and expertise necessary to extract and deal with them, as access to them requires equipment Drilling and advanced technical inspection devices to accurately locate their whereabouts in preparation for removal, dismantling and destruction.
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights held the occupation authorities fully responsible for the remnants of the aggression and for the indiscriminate effects that threaten the lives of the civilian population, especially children.
PCHR warned of casualties due to remnants of explosive Israeli bombs, bombs and missiles.
He called on the international community to intervene immediately in order to put an end to the human suffering of the civilian population resulting from the explosive remnants of aggression, and to find a mechanism to communicate technical information to the United Nations and international explosive removal agencies in order to facilitate their rapid and immediate removal to reduce the risk of civilian casualties.
He also called for providing the Gaza Strip with UN experts in the field of explosives and providing it with all the capabilities, mechanisms and equipment necessary to deal with and destroy the remnants of munitions and weapons that fell during the recent aggression, and to put pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to allow their entry.
He called on the international community to intervene immediately in order to compel the occupation authorities to fulfill their legal responsibility to protect the civilian population in the Strip.
