Secretary of the Executive Committee of the PLO, Saeb Erekat, called today, Wednesday, for international intervention to release the prisoners after the prisoner Kamal Abu Waer was infected with the Corona virus inside prisons.
Erekat urged the international community to "carry out its responsibilities to deter and pressure Israel to release the sick prisoner, Kamal Abu Waar, immediately, and to release all sick prisoners, the elderly, children and women before it is too late."
This came in official letters addressed to Erekat to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the foreign ministers of Russia, China, the European Union and Britain, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Erekat renewed the PLO´s request to send an investigation and monitoring mission to the occupation prisons, and to investigate "continuous and systematic crimes that violate the rules of international law, international humanitarian law and human rights law."
He warned that the Corona virus is still active, and there are hundreds of sick prisoners, and those with severe health conditions that make them more vulnerable to infection with the virus.
Erekat warned of the "seriousness of the conditions inside the Israeli prisons in light of the spread of the Corona virus and preventing the Prisons Authority from providing sterilizers and cleaning materials, and the impact on the lives of the prisoners, especially 700 sick prisoners, including 300 prisoners suffering from chronic diseases and in need of continuous treatment."
He also explained the situation of the prisoner Kamal Abu Waer (46 years), stressing that this message revolves around his infection with the virus several days ago, and the need to release him and his colleagues before it is too late.
Erekat denounced, "Israel denies the international calls for ensuring adequate health care and taking preventive measures, and for the release of the most vulnerable prisoners, including the statement of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michel Bachelet, the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, or the statement of the envoys of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Middle East." .
