The International Socialist Organization condemned the policies of the Israeli occupation in Palestine and the statements of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intending to annex the Jordan Valley and settlements and the continuation of the occupying state´s measures to deepen settlements, land grabs and house demolitions.
This came during a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Organization, which was held in New York on the sidelines of the meetings of the General Assembly of the United Nations, in the presence of the President of the organization George Papandreou, and his deputy, head of the Department of Expatriates Affairs in the PLO Socialist ministers participating in meetings of the General Assembly, representatives of a number of socialist parties in the world.
He stressed that all socialist countries and parties adopt a two-state solution, the need to establish an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of refugees to return.
The meeting discussed a number of important international issues, particularly the Palestinian issue, the role of the Socialist Organization in resolving conflicts, international peace and security, and ways to promote common values ​​and overcome the challenges facing democracy around the world.
In his speech during the meeting, Shaath talked about the situation and developments in Palestine, and Israel´s continued policies and procedures on the ground in clear violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.
He stressed the need to work diligently to protect the two-state solution and the implementation of the resolutions of international legitimacy, in particular Security Council resolution 2334, which affirms the illegality of the settlements and calls on Israel to stop completely settlement activities.
He praised the role played by international socialism in the world arena in spreading the principles of freedom, peace and democracy, pointing out its important positions and decisions towards the Palestinian cause.
The International Socialist Organization elected Nabil Shaath as its vice president during its 25th General Conference, held in Colombia in March last year.
