NEW DELHI - New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardenne announced on Friday that 40 people were killed and dozens wounded in a terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, South Island, during Friday prayers.
"The attack on the mosques is a terrorist and has been prepared in advance," New Zealand´s prime minister told a news conference. According to Sky News.
"It is too early to give further details about the attack on the mosques waiting for the investigations to end," she said, adding that the security threat in the country had been raised.
She noted that there were "indications of other schemes".
New Zealand police said the attack took place during Friday prayers, leaving 40 dead and dozens injured, noting that it had arrested four suspects in connection with the attack.
New Zealand police have ordered all mosques in the country to close until further notice.
"At this stage we can not comment on the potential motives of the attackers or the reasons for their aggression, but we have asked all the mosques in the country to close their doors and recommended that worshipers refrain from going to mosques now," police said on its official website.
The municipality has given a phone line to anxious students about the fate of their children, who were taking part not long ago in a march against climate change.
