Washington imposes sanctions on individuals associated with Russia for interference in the elections

On Thursday, the US government imposed sanctions on four individuals with links to Russia, accusing them of trying to influence the US electoral process.

The US Treasury said in a statement that the individuals were Andrei Dirkash, a member of Ukraine´s parliament, and three Russian citizens due to their ties to the Internet Research Agency (IRA).

The Russia-based agency was blacklisted in 2018 for its activities against the US elections, but Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in the US elections.

"From at least late 2019 until mid-2020, Dirkash launched a covert influence campaign that focused on creating false and unsupported narratives related to US officials in the upcoming 2020 presidential elections," the statement said.

The statement also said that Dirkash was "an active Russian agent for more than a decade, and maintains close contacts with Russian intelligence."
