Former Vietnamese President Lee Duc Anh, known for fighting the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, was sworn in Friday at an official funeral.
Anh died on 22 April in Hanoi after suffering a brain haemorrhage in February.
Le Duc Anh fought four wars since 1945 and was the supreme commander of the Vietnamese forces fighting in Cambodia during the 1980s after Hanoi overthrew the Pol Pot territory, which committed genocide in 1979.
Although Vietnam withdrew its forces from Cambodia in 1989, it is widely credited with paving the way for the final defeat of the Khmer Rouge in 1998.
Anh served as national defense minister from 1987 to 1991 and was elected president of Vietnam in 1992. He gained fame for resisting economic reforms in favor of traditional Marxism-Leninism in the one-party communist state. He suffered a stroke in 1996 and resigned the following year.
