The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Government of the United Kingdom on Tuesday launched a three-year support agreement with a total value of US $3.6 million for Palestine refugees from Syria living in Jordan.
In a press release today, UNRWA said the launch ceremony was held at the new Amman Camp (units), in the presence of the head of the Department of British Development in Jordan and the humanitarian response Advisor-Jordan at the British Department for International Development.
According to UNRWA, over the course of its three-year period, UNRWA in Jordan will be able to provide emergency relief services to Palestine refugees from Syria residing in Jordan, including the provision of food and non-food items and housing, and the Convention also includes the provision of all assistance Unconditional cash for this category of Palestine refugees.
"The United Kingdom remains firmly committed to the vital mission of UNRWA, which provides daily and necessary support to Palestine refugees in Jordan and across the region," said Edward Okden, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Jordan.
"As one of the major donors to UNRWA, we have already increased our contribution to support UNRWA several times this year, to ensure that educational services and vital health care are not disrupted."
"This donation of £5 million to Palestine refugees from Syria will bring the UK´s contribution to over £65 million this year," he said.
He stressed that this funding will help meet their basic needs, including shelter and food, and enable continued access to UNRWA schools and health clinics throughout Jordan, saying: "We remain committed to maintaining the core mission of UNRWA to move forward."
"The United Kingdom is a long-standing donor to UNRWA and Palestine refugees, and this three-year agreement provides sustainability for our humanitarian and emergency interventions for this particular category of refugees," said Director of UNRWA operations in Jordan Roger Davis.
Added: " This generous contribution today will cover the needs of nearly two thirds of Palestine refugees from Syria living in Jordan in the last quarter, and the needs of the entire group in the first quarter of 2019. "
