The humanitarian coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Jimmy Mcguldrake, on Monday called on donors to immediately finance the supply of emergency fuel to prevent the total suspension of basic services in the Gaza Strip.
"Life-saving services in the Gaza Strip are heavily dependent on donor-funded emergency fuel," Mcgolderick said. We are now witnessing the depletion of this fuel, and we offer the last remaining of our supplies over the next few days. Without securing the necessary funds to enable the uninterrupted supply of fuel, the service providers will be forced to suspend or substantially downsize their operations starting in the early September of September, with potentially dangerous consequences. "
The United Nations-supplied emergency fuel provides some 250 health, water and sanitation facilities for the operation of spare generators, which are indispensable under the chronic energy crisis in Gaza, leaving the population without electricity for a period not exceeding five hours a day.
Among the most vulnerable to fuel shortages are a total of 4,800 patients in Gaza hospitals, who rely on electrical appliances in intensive care departments, including newborn children, and patients who rely on dialysis or are lying in trauma wards.
"If donors intervene quickly, we will be able to prevent a serious deterioration, such as the spread of disease or other public health concerns," Mcgolderick said.
