President Donald Trump has appointed US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell as special envoy for peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo, the White House announced late Thursday.
According to the statement, Grenell will perform the functions of ambassador and special envoy at the same time.
According to US media reports, talks have recently been held with Grenell to take up a position in the US administration in Washington. It is believed that he was on his way to become the US national security adviser to succeed John Bolton.
Grenell has been the US ambassador to Berlin since April 2018.
It is noteworthy that relations are tense between the Republic of Serbia and its former province after nearly two decades of the Kosovo war that resulted in the independence of the province, but Belgrade refuses to recognize this and considers Kosovo a province.
