The Yemeni government announced today, Monday, that the World Bank has agreed to provide grants to Yemen worth 204 million dollars to support those affected by the repercussions of the new Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and the ongoing conflict in the country.
"The World Bank today agreed to provide grants to Yemen worth $ 204 million to help increase access to basic services and economic opportunities for the population groups affected by the conflict," the Yemeni Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation said in a statement reported by the government-run Yemeni News Agency (Saba). She explained, "The grants will finance the two emergency response projects for social protection and response to the Corona pandemic, and the education project."
The statement indicated that "the two projects will jointly provide vital support to the population, who have been affected during the past years by the deteriorating economic and educational situation and food insecurity even before the outbreak of the pandemic in the country at the beginning of this year."
Yemen has been suffering from a bloody conflict between government forces and the Houthis since late 2014, which resulted in "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world," according to United Nations estimates. This poor and troubled country is also facing an outbreak of Coronavirus and a number of communicable diseases.
Yemen has recorded 2,087 cases of Coronavirus, including 606 deaths and 1,384 recoveries, according to the government´s National Committee to Combat Corona.
