The White House said it was "sad" to confirm Riyadh that the opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
"We will continue to follow international investigations closely in this tragic incident and call for transparent justice in due course and in accordance with all due process," said Sarah Sanders in a statement.
"We are saddened to hear the death of Mr. Khashoggi, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, fiancee and friends. "
Sanders also pointed out that Saudi Arabia "has taken action against the suspects I have identified so far", in a clear reference to many people who lost their jobs while detaining others.
