The Palestinian information ministry on Thursday called on the UN Security Council to intervene to stop "violations" by Israel against journalists.
According to a statement received by Xinhua, the ministry sent a written letter to Ambassador Jose Singer of the Dominican Republic, whose country is presiding over the Security Council at the current session.
In its letter, it referred to 926 Israeli violations of media freedom in the Palestinian territories during 2018, the killing of two journalists in the Gaza Strip, the shelling of media and cultural institutions, the targeting of printing presses, and the continued detention of 19 Palestinian journalists.
It called on the Security Council to implement its decision No. 2222 concerning the protection of journalists and the guarantor against impunity for the aggressors.
The decision, which was issued on May 27, on the protection of civilians, journalists, media workers and associated personnel, "does not apply to Palestinian journalists, as the aggressors continue to go unpunished and attend crime after another," she said.
The Palestinian information Ministry called on the Security Council to translate the provisions of its resolution, in particular the prosecution of those involved in abuses and violations against journalists, to ensure their continued impunity and the immediate release of journalists detained in Israeli jails.
The Ministry also urged the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Union of Arab journalists, and journalists ´ unions in the world to consider 2019 years to protect media professionals in the Palestinian territories.
