The majority of US forces sent to Kabul to evacuate diplomats amid the Taliban´s rapid advance on the ground, the majority of them will arrive by Sunday, the Pentagon announced Friday.
On Friday, US Defense Department spokesman John Kirby announced the arrival of the first US Marines to Kabul Airport as part of a mission that President Joe Biden issued an order Thursday to be implemented in the midst of the Taliban making rapid field progress in conjunction with the completion of US forces withdrawing from the country.
Kirby said he expects the majority of the 3,000 items to arrive by the end of the week.
This week, about 4,200 people work at the US embassy in Kabul, where thousands of Afghan interpreters and others who helped US forces during the 20-year invasion are seeking to leave the country for fear of Taliban reprisals.
On the air evacuations, Kirby said that the large number "would not be a problem," explaining, "We are able to evacuate thousands a day."
