The Palestinian Media Forum calls on the Meta company to do justice to the Palestinian narrative

Today, Saturday, the Palestinian Media Forum expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the position of the "Meta" company, which owns Facebook and Instagram, regarding the recommendations of a recent study that showed its bias against the Palestinians during the recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, attached thus, this harmed the basic human rights of Palestinian users during the war on Gaza, and confirms that the selectivity in dealing with the study´s recommendations reinforces the conviction of the complicity of the “Meta” company´s management with the Israeli occupation in blocking the Palestinian narrative from the world´s attention.

According to the study conducted by the independent consulting company Business for Social Responsibility, for Meta, the company´s actions in May 2021 had a negative impact on the rights of Palestinian users to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and political participation, which was reflected in their ability to share information and their vision. About their experiences as they, explaining that many Palestinians who tried to document “violence and protest” using the two sites had their posts automatically hidden without consulting them. 


It is noteworthy that 12 civil society and human rights organizations sent an open letter protesting the delay of the Meta company in issuing the results of the study, which the company had pledged to publish in the first quarter of this year.

The Palestinian Media Forum condemned the double standards followed by Meta, as it pursues Palestinian content that expresses the grievances of the Palestinian people under the yoke of the Israeli occupation, and opens the door to hate speech, racism and incitement in the Israeli pages.


The forum called on Meta to abide by the principles of human rights that guarantee freedom of opinion and expression and relevant international laws, and to stop siding with the executioner at the expense of the victim, as well as the need to adhere to the values​ ​of justice and humanity through fairness to the Palestinian content.    

He stressed that the results of the study represent a condemnation of the Meta company, which persisted in combating Palestinian content in recent years, reaching the peak of the violations during the recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which should be addressed by all human rights advocates and defenders of freedom of opinion and expression through various means. The law obliges it to allow the Palestinian people to express their opinion freely, like the peoples of the world, and not to succumb to the blackmail and pressures of the Israeli occupation.
