Shanghai will build 8,000 overseas 5G base stations in 2021 as part of efforts to accelerate construction of new infrastructure in the digital age, local authorities said Sunday.
In the government work report presented at the ongoing Fifth Session of the 15th Shanghai Municipal People´s Congress, City Mayor Gong Cheng said that Shanghai will focus on advancing digital transformation and speeding up the construction of a digital center of global reputation.
Gong added that Shanghai will promote the digital economy in 2021 by focusing on key areas such as smart factories, industrial internet and e-commerce platforms.
By the end of October last year, Shanghai had built a total of 31,400 outdoor 5G base stations and 49,800 indoor small 5G base stations, thus achieving continuous coverage of 5G networks in urban areas and major suburbs of the city.
According to the city´s draft fourteenth five-year plan (2021-2025), Shanghai will promote the construction of independent 5G networks (SA) and achieve full 5G coverage in the city by 2025. The average download speed of information from the 5G network will reach 500 Mbps in Shanghai. .
