Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in the Gaza Strip , Naji Sarhan, said today, Tuesday, that the sector needs $3 billion for reconstruction and development.
Sarhan pointed out, during an interview with a group of missions in his office in Gaza City, that there are houses destroyed and damaged that have not been reconstructed since the 2014 Israeli aggression, which completed the reconstruction of only 40%, passing through the similar aggression that took place in other years, including May 2021, which During it, about 1,700 housing units were destroyed, and about 1,000 were reconstructed.
He indicated that about 2,300 housing units were completely destroyed and were not rebuilt during the wars and the repeated Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip in recent years.
Regarding the latest aggression a few weeks ago, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing said that it completely destroyed 25 housing units, 80 partially uninhabitable units, and 2000 partially uninhabitable units, indicating that the assessment of the damages is near completion.
Sarhan warned of an explosion in the situation in the event of the continuation of the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip, praising at the same time the efforts of countries that contribute to the reconstruction, especially Qatar and Egypt.
Regarding the Egyptian projects, Sarhan explained that 30% of the projects have been completed, noting that they include the construction of 3 residential cities, comprising 2,500 housing units, and the Corniche of Al Bahar Street in the north of the Strip.
He pointed out that the Gaza Strip needs more than 100,000 housing units to fill the current, especially since the Strip annually needs 14,000 housing units to equalize demographic growth.
