Russian serial killer convicted of killing 78 women

A Russian court on Monday convicted a former soldier of killing 56 women three years after he was convicted of murdering 22 other women, making him one of the deadliest killers in Russia´s modern history.

Mikhail Popkov, 54, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court, known as the Angarsk serial killer for his city in Siberia.

The reasoning of the verdict indicates that he took his victims to isolated places where they were killed by axes or knives and some of them were raped.

Police arrested the butcher in the Far east of the country in 2012, 20 years after his crimes began, and was sentenced to life imprisonment in January January 2015 for murdering 22 women and attempting to kill two others.

On Monday, Popkov confessed to committing 60 other crimes, including 59 murders.

The Ripper provided information that led the police to the burial places of his victims, who were killed 15 to 20 years ago, as well as the personal belongings of the victims and the weapons used in the murder, investigators said yesterday.

The investigators added that his victims were women aged between 16 and 40, but he killed one man who was a colleague of the police.

According to the Russian Information Agency, a prosecution official told the court that Popkov had an uncanny ability to remember the details of his crimes, including the clothes of the victims, their costume and the tattoos painted on their bodies.
