Pyongyang withdraws from inter-Korean liaison office

North Korea withdrew from the inter-Korean liaison office in the border town of Kisong on Friday, the unity ministry said in Seoul.

The development came after the collapse of the second summit between the United States and North Korea in Vietnam last month because of differences over the sanctions imposed by the United States on the country, according to the Associated Press.

North Korea informed South Korea of its decision during a call at the liaison office of the North Korean border city of Kaesong, the unity ministry said.

The ministry described the North´s decision as "regrettable," adding that Pyongyang did not give any specific reason for its recent action.

A meeting of the National Security Council ,aired by South Korea´s national security adviser, was held to discuss North Korea´s withdrawal, the official Yonhap news agency reported.

The Liaison Office was opened last September as part of a series of reconciliation steps.
