The Polish Foreign Ministry on Monday summoned Israeli Ambassador to Warsaw Anna Azari for the second time in four days, amid continued statements from Israeli officials pointing to the involvement of Poland in the Holocaust.
The newspaper Yisrael Hume Hebrew quoted a source close to Polish Prime Minister Matyosh Muravski, he is seriously considering severing ties with Tel Aviv after the accusations, especially those issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Moravski canceled his visit to Israel to attend a summit of four Central and Eastern European countries in Tel Aviv this week in the presence of the leaders of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.
Israel´s acting foreign minister, Israel Katz, told Army Radio on Thursday that he supports maintaining relations with Poland, but reiterated his previous view.
"The historical truth can not be changed ... Many Poles cooperated with the Nazis and participated in the destruction of the Jews during the Holocaust," he said. "Anti-Semitism was rooted in the Poles before, during and after the Holocaust."
Before World War II, Poland was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the world and almost disappeared by the Nazis.
Many Poles still refuse to accept research showing that thousands participated in the Holocaust as well as thousands who risked their lives to help the Jews.
Tension between Israel and Poland escalated last year after Poland introduced new legislation criminalizing the use of sentences such as "Polish death camps" and sentenced to up to three years´ imprisonment.
Poland has softened legislation and abolished prison terms after pressure from the US government and sharp criticism in Israel.
