The Chernobyl Spirit company, led by British scientist Jim Smith, has produced vodka from the resources of the nuclear explosion zone in Chernobyl, Ukraine.
The new product, "Atomic Vodka", was first made using water and wheat planted in the deserted area after the nuclear disaster, according to the product´s location.
The disaster occurred on 26 April 1986, at the fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where hundreds of workers and firefighters tried to extinguish the flames for 10 days.
More than 400 times more radioactive waste was released into the atmosphere than the 1945 Hiroshima disaster. As a result, a cloud of nuclear radiation was formed.
Back to the alcohol product, experts say it is safe to drink and is not affected by nuclear radiation.
Smith and his colleagues plan to deliver profits from Atomic Vodka to local citizens, whose profits have been damaged by the nuclear explosion. At least 75 percent of the profits will be donated to support people in the affected areas and to preserve wildlife.
The Ukrainian scientist Gennady Laptev: "We must not abandon the region despite what happened, we can use it in several ways and we can produce something that will be completely clean of radioactivity."
Alexander Borovoy, a Soviet nuclear physicist and expert on severe accidents at the National Center of the Kurchatov Research Institute, told Sputnik about the security of the Chernobyl region,
"I spent 23 years in Chernobyl, if you have a good tourist guide that knows the place, visiting the affected area is completely safe, but if you visit the place on your own, of course you will not receive any lethal doses, but you may be affected by radiation.
