Palestinian presidency warns of prejudice to the status quo in "Al-Aqsa"

The Palestinian presidency on Wednesday warned against prejudging the status quo at the Al-Aqsa mosque after an Israeli minister called for it.

In a statement published by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, the Palestinian Presidency condemned the statements of the Israeli Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan calling for changing the historical situation in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

"We condemn these statements aimed at increasing tension and fueling the feelings of the Palestinian people and the Arab and Islamic nations," the presidency said, stressing that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a red line that will never be compromised.

She added that the Israeli government "bears the responsibility for provocations and continued attacks on religious places in the occupied city of Jerusalem, especially against the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

The Palestinian presidency called on the international community to intervene to pressure Israel to "stop these attempts, which, if they continue, will lead to an uncontrollable situation or bear serious consequences."

For his part, Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat announced that the committee will hold a consultative meeting tomorrow.

Erekat said in a statement to the official Voice of Palestine radio that the call of an Israeli minister to change the status quo in Al-Aqsa is "an integral part of a plan aimed at imposing the demographic and geographical realities of occupation on the ground through ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people."

On Tuesday, Ardan called on the radio to change the status quo in Jerusalem so that Jews can perform Talmudic rituals in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, saying that the current reality prevailing since 1967 "carries injustice to the Jews and must work to change it."
