US President Donald Trump lost more than $ 1 billion over a decade in the 1980s and 1990s before entering politics, the New York Times reported.

According to the newspaper´s report, which was based on copies of official tax records of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), its work was "in a darker state than previously known."

Trump reported losses of $ 1.17 billion between 1985 and 1994, including more than $ 250 million in 1990 and almost the same in 1991.

The losses were so high that he did not pay taxes for eight of those 10 years.

The report was published as Democratic lawmakers try to get Trump tax returns from 2013 to 2018.
